Miss Marple guides the police detectives finding the murder weapon and MO while sorting through the complex set of relationships among all the players, and determine what the smelly dead fish exciting a dog indicates, concluding on a most convoluted vindictive plot. The Greenway Estate in Devon, acquired by the couple as a summer residence in 1938, is now in the care of the National Trust. The hotel maintains Christies room as a memorial to the author. Shortly after, Lady Tressilian's devoted maid finds her mistress bludgeoned to death in bed a short time later. Christies 1934 novel Murder on the Orient Express was written in the Hotel Pera Palace in Istanbul, Turkey, the southern terminus of the railway.
Treves is found dead from overexertion taking the hotel staircase when the lift was falsely labeled out of order the day after a dinner party at Lady Tressilian's home where he hinted mysteriously at a bizarre fatal arrow non-accident between boys.
Miss Marple is visiting sick, spoiled old school friend Lady Camilla Tressilian at her Devon island estate, along with an eclectic group: tennis celebrity Neville Strange and his insecure wife Kay, co-heir to the late Matthew Tressilian's fortune, Neville's former wife Audrey still to Camilla's taste and her childhood friend and cousin Thomas Royde, a Malay planter who missed out on his true love to his brother who died in a car accident nearby, charming semi-gigolo Ted Latimer mutually attracted to Kay Strange and finally Freddie Treves, a retired solicitor.
